THERAMENA FERNANDEZ
WELCOME
My journey as a designer began at eight years old, inspired by YouTube’s miniature-making community. I turned a soggy sponge into a "chocolate cake" and transformed my family’s recycling bin into treasures: cereal boxes became wardrobes, scratch paper turned into mugs, and plastic bottles into fountain glasses. The real joy was in creating something extraordinary from the ordinary.
This passion for creating became my refuge during a challenging chapter of my life. After moving from the Philippines to the U.S., I struggled to adjust to a new culture and environment, feeling disconnected from my family and my past. Crafting miniatures gave me a sense of control and comfort amidst the chaos, allowing me to build my little worlds when the real one felt overwhelming.
Over time, this love for transforming the mundane into something meaningful evolved into a broader passion for design. Whether turning old clothes into practical accessories or repurposing everyday items into something exciting, I discovered the beauty in the process of creation. For me, design isn’t just about the result, it’s about the journey, the problem-solving, and the magic of transformation.
Now, as I step into this new chapter, I’m excited to share the sense of freedom and creativity that my miniature world gave me, bringing that same spark to everything I create as a designer.

01 BEHIND THE SEAMSDESIGN 376
DATE: DECEMBER 2024
COURSE: ADVANCE TYPOGRAPHYFor this project, I created a four-page tabloid and a one-page scrolling microsite to feature an interview with Priscilla Khek, a professional swimwear designer. The tabloid, titled Behind the Seams, combines bold editorial design with vibrant imagery to bring Priscilla’s insights to life. It highlights her journey, creative process, and advice for aspiring designers, offering an in-depth look into the competitive world of swimwear design.
This project taught me how to merge compelling storytelling with practical design solutions across print and digital mediums. Collaborating with a professional designer like Priscilla allowed me to gain deeper insights into the importance of adaptability, creativity, and customer-focused design. These experiences honed my skills in layout design, typography, and cross-platform prototyping—essential tools I’m eager to bring to future projects.
MOBILE
For the mobile design, I aimed to retain the editorial aesthetic by incorporating a striking ‘cover’ to set the stage. To emphasize the creative process, I introduced a scrapbook-inspired design, evoking the feeling of actively engaging in the act of making. This approach is reinforced by 3D elements such as fabric textures and scissors, creating a sense of controlled chaos that mirrors the iterative nature of design. Inspired by the layered, scrapbook-like visuals in VOX’s YouTube videos, I sought to balance playfulness with structure. I also implemented a dark mode palette to enhance the vibrancy of the clothing elements, allowing the colors to pop and draw focus within the composition.
